Surah Al-Fatihah (Arabic: سورة الفاتحة‎, Sūratu al-Fātihah, "The Opener") is the first chapter of the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an. Its seven verses are a prayer for the Allah's guidance, and stress its lordship and mercy. This chapter has an essential role in daily prayers; Muslims recite the Surah Al-Fatiha at least seventeen times a day, at the start of each unit of prayer.

Interpretation

Muslims believe that the Qur'an is a revelation given in Arabic from God (Allah). Translations into other languages are considered to be merely superficial "interpretations" of the meanings and not authentic versions of the Qur'an.

The Arabic text with transliteration and translation in English is as follows: [Qur'an 1:1].

Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Al ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-'ālamīn
All appreciation, gratefulness and thankfulness are to Allah alone, Lord of the Worlds (human kind, jinn and all that exists; whether seen or unseen)

Ar raḥmāni r-raḥīm
(Allah Is), The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Māliki yawmi d-dīn
The Possessor (Holder, Owner, Caller and Only Ruler) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. on the Last Day of Judgment or on the Day of Resurrection)

Iyyāka na'budu wa iyyāka nasta'īn
You (Alone) we worship (adore and abide by Your Guidance), and You (Alone) we seek help (on everything)

Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm
Direct (Oh Allah) all of us (wholly) to the Straight Path (i.e. to the Way of Islam)

Ṣirāṭ al-laḏīna an'amta 'alayhim ġayril maġḍūbi 'alayhim walāḍ ḍāllīn
The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who have earned Your Anger/Wrath, nor of those who have lost their way and are astray.
