Composition courses in college serve as the foundation for all future academic writing. College English is a pretty useful course to have under one's belt and practically all colleges require their attendees to take freshman and sophomore levels this. Colleges and Universities recognize the need to make writing courses a necessary element of the curriculum, but it is up to the student to make the best of the opportunities that a higher education makes available to them.

Students coming in fresh out of high school may not be accustomed to the level of writing that will be required of them in college. Composition serves as that primer for what one should expect to face when they get into upper-division courses. Colleges want to ensure that their students are technically prepared to produce quality academic writing in all of their courses.
Academic writing has different purposes and requirements from your average prose. English comp is a writing and research intensive course that develops strong critical thinking skills and quality writing abilities. Everything taught in this course is for these two primary goals.
Much of the academic writing done in college consists of research-based arguments. A composition course will teach students how to conduct research. Teachers will point students in the direction of available resources and instruct them in how to evaluate the credibility of the sources they do come upon.
When doing research, it is important for students to determine what resources offer the best support for their argument and if those writings are grounded in proven expertise, not just a case of "he said/she said". Coupled with doing research, students will learn how to properly cite their resources and most often teachers will use the MLA (Modern Language Association) standard of citation unless they are in a journalistic or scientific curriculum that uses different standards.
When you reach higher level courses, students will be expected to know how to write an academic paper. By this stage, professors shouldn't have to tell you how to develop a thesis or how to arrange an argument. All of these techniques will be addressed in English composition one and two.
Above all other assets, this course will teach students how to think critically by analyzing the various circumstances within the writing process. Systematically addressing questions such as these will build critical thinkers. Not only is critical thinking essential in an academic setting, but in the workplace as well.
