Asbabun Nuzul

There are several hadiths that explain Asbabun Nuzul this sura which is entirely based on the same core that is an answer to the request attributes depiction of God in which God is One (Al-Ikhlas [112]: 1), everything depends on Him (al- Ikhlas [112]: 2), no children and was born (Al-Ikhlas [112]: 3), and there is no equal to Him (Al-Ikhlas [112]: 4).

Viewed from the very first event, Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated that a group of Bani Quraish Prophet Muhammad never asked to explain the ancestry of God and then go down this surah. Another History sourced from Ubay ibn Jarir ibn Abdillah Ka'ab and that says that the polytheists said to the Prophet Muhammad, "Explain to us the properties of your Lord." Then go down this sura to explain the request. In this hadith, hadith sourced from Jarir ibn Abdullah made the argument that this sura Makkiyah. In addition, from Ibn Abbas and Sa'id bin Jubair mentions that the Jews are among Kab bin Ashraf and Huyayy bin Akhtab came to the Prophet and asked the same thing with the word first, then go down this surah. In this hadeeth Sa'id bin Jubair asserted that this sura including Madaniyah. Qatadah history and also mentions the Prophet Muhammad visited the Ahzab (Partnership between the Banu Quraish, the Jews of Medina, the Bani Ghatafan of Ta'if and Munafiqin some tribes around Medina and Mecca) are also menyanyakan the image of God and followed by a decline in this sura.

Because of the different sources, the status of this surah Makkiyah or Madaniyah still in question and as though the sources seem kotradiksi one another. According to Abul A'la Maududi, from the hadiths that reported it, judging from the earliest events that occur, these chapters include Makkiyah. The first event occurred, ie in the early period of Islam in Mecca that is, when Banu Quraish to ask the ancestors of God. Then the next incident occurred in Medina where Arab Christians or anyone else asking the image of God and then go down this surah. According Madudi, different sources showed that the sura was sent down repeatedly. If somewhere there and there's Prophet Muhammad who asked the same question with the previous event, then the same verse or sura be revealed again to answer that question. In addition, evidence that this sura Makkiyah Bilal bin Rabah is when the Umayyad bin Khalaf tortured her employer after embracing Islam. While being tortured he cried, "Allahu Ahad, Allahu Ahad!" (Allah the Almighty, God Almighty!). This event takes place in Mecca in the early period of Islam so that shows that this sura was sent down before and Bilal inspired verse of this surah.

Another opinion that is by as-Suyuti. He said the word "al-league" in the hadith that comes from Ubay bin Ka'ab fixed on the idolaters of the Ahzab, thus indicating that this sura Madaniyyah accordance with the hadith of Ibn Abbas. And so he said there is no contradiction between the two hadith if this surah Madaniyah. Description is reinforced also by Shaykh Abus history in the Kitab al-Adhamah of Aban sourced from Anas who related that the Jews of Khaibar came to the Prophet and said, "O Abal Qasim! God made the angels of light hijab, Adam of black soil, the devil of towering flames, the sky from the smoke, and earth from the scum of water. Try to explain to us about the Lord. " The Prophet did not answer and then Gabriel brought revelation of this sura to answer the request Khaibar Jews.

Virtue

In Islam stories

In several hadith says that Muhammad once said that the reward once read surah Al-Ikhlas equal to a third reading the Qur'an, so read 3 times this same mengkhatam sura of the Qur'an. The story was recorded in the hadith related several stories. Like the story of when the Prophet asked his companions to mengkhatam the Qur'an in one night. Omar considers it impossible, but so Ali menyanggupinya. Umar then think Ali does not understand the purpose of the prophet because it is still young. Ali then read surah Al-Ikhlas 3 times and the Prophet Muhammad fix it. In the hadiths related to this case, the primacy of surah Al-Ikhlas really have a role in the Qur'an so that once read it together with a third reading the Qur'an.

Anas bin Malik also recorded the related story surah Al-Ikhlas is where 70,000 angels are sent to a friend in Medina who died up to dim the sun. 70,000 angel sent just because he often read this sura. And because of the many angels who are sent, Anas bin Malik who was with Prophet Muhammad in Tabuk feel the sunlight dimmed unlike biasannya from which the angel Gabriel came to proclaim the events that are happening in Madinah.

Other Primacy

In the history of Prophet Muhammad Ibn 'Abbas mentioned during the Isra' to the sky, see the Throne above 360,000 joints where the distance between the joints 300,000 years of travel. At each joint there are as many as 12,000 and the Sahara desert vast Sahara desert that each one is from east to west. In each of the Sahara desert, there are also 80,000 angels where every angel read surah Al-Ikhlas and after reading that they pray for their rewards given to people who read Al-Ikhlas, both men and women.

In addition, the Prophet Muhammad also said that Qul Huwallahu Sunday (paragraph 1) written on the wings of Gabriel, Allahus Shamad (paragraph 2) on the wing Michael, Lam Yalid Walam Yuulad (paragraph 3) on the wings of Azrael, and Walam Yaqullahu Khufuwan Sunday (paragraph 4 ) on the wing Israfil. And who reads al-Ikhlas reward reading the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Qur'an. Then associated companions, the Prophet once said that Qul Huwallahu Sunday (paragraph 1) written on the forehead of Abu Bakr, Allahus Shamad (paragraph 2) on the forehead Omar, Lam Yalid Walam Yuulad (paragraph 3) on the forehead Uthman, and Walam Yaqullahu Khufuwan Sunday (paragraph 4) on the forehead Ali.

Meanwhile, another hadith says that when people read Al-Ikhlas when sick until he died, he did not rot in the grave and will be carried by the angels with wings across Siratul Mustaqim to heaven.

Sura 112, al-Ikhlas (The Purity)[Qur'an 112:1], like all surat except for the ninth, begins with "In the name of God" (Bismillah), which is not part of any sura except al-Fatihah but is written before every sura except for Surah 9 and is not counted among the verses of a sura. It is printed before all surat except the ninth in all printed copies of the Qur'an (mushaf) since it is commanded in the Qur'an to say Bismillah whenever one reads or recites the Qur'an.

Hadith Referring to al-Ikhlas

According to a hadith, this sura is an especially important and honored part of the Quran:

  1. Imam Malik bin Anas has said that `Ubayd bin Hunayn heard Abu Hurayrah speaking:

"I was walking with the Prophet and we heard a man reciting "Say: He, God, is One" The God's Apostle said: "It is inevitable" I asked "what?": He responded: "Paradise."

  2. Abu Said has narrated that he heard the Prophet saying:

"Isn't every one of you able to recite one third of the Quran during a night?" They thought it was very difficult, so they asked: "Who is able to do that, O Apostle of God?" He responded: "He is God, the One and Only is one third of the Qur'an."

  3. Al-Bukhari reported from Amrah bint Abdur-Rahman, who used to stay in the apartment of Aishah radhi'Allahu 'anha, the wife of the Prophet, that Aishah said, "The Prophet sent a man as the commander of a war expedition and he use to lead his companions in prayer with recitation (of the Quran). And he would complete his recitation with the recitation, 'say He is Allah, One'. So when they returned, they mentioned that to the Prophet and he said, "Ask him why does he do that". So they asked him and he said, "Because it is the description of Ar-Rahman and I love to recite it". So the Prophet said, "Inform him that Allah the Most High Loves him."

This is how Al-Bukhari recorded this hadith in his book of tawhid. Muslim and an-Nisai also recorded it.

Importance

This sura is considered the Summary of whole Quran by almost all notable classical and modern islamic scholars including Imam Shafi, Ibn Kathir, Dr.Zakir Naik, Dr.Israr Ahmed and Dr.Farhat Hashmi.

  • Ibn Kathir , a traditional exegete holds that this sura, as a warning to believers not to waste time or they we could be humiliated or even ruined. (IbnKathir, 2010).

  • T. B. Irving , a contemporary exegete, says that the surah offers a consoling prayer, since it brings home to believers how all things change, and to strengthen one to learn patiently to face the inevitable. (Irving, 1985, p. 389).

  • Imam Shafi , a jurist and traditional scholar of Islam, held-that if God had only revealed this surah it would have been sufficient for the guidance of all humankind. (IbnKathir, 2010). It summarized the very essence of the Qur'anic message. Thus, Imam Shafi’i asserts that if one followed its counsel, it was enough for humankind to achieve success in life.(Imam Shafi’i d. 820)

  • Sayyid Qutb , a modern exegete of the Qur'an, asserts that this surah outlines a complete system for human life based on an Islamic viewpoint. He says that it defines, in the clearest and most concise form, the basic concept of faith in the context of its comprehensive reality (1979, p. 274). He further says that he is gravely shocked to see the loss and ruin in which humanity finds itself. He is critical of Muslims and non-Muslims and particularly witnessing that humankind is turning away from the goodness that God has bestowed upon it. He is confident that the guidance of this surah is what made the early Muslim great as it can do for those that follow it in the long history of humanity. He says that once the early Arabs were aroused by such surahs, they quickly burst the bounds of Arabia and zealously worked toward the salvation of humanity (Qutb (d. 1966), 1979, p. 280).

  • Toshihiko Izutsu: The surah is significant in that an entire practical code of conduct was binding upon the believer the moment he/she truly believed in the oneness of God and the truth of the Prophetic conduct (Isutzu, 2007, p. 106).

  • Al-Tabarani: Interestingly, when humankind finds itself at a loss; it can revive itself by returning to the formula provided by the third verse and the four principles/conditions, which are adhered to as a foundation. We saw how these four principles operated on both physical and spiritual levels. This is probably the reason why the companions of the Prophet did not want to become heedless of the foundational message of Islam. Consequently, they used to meet one another and only depart until one of them recited surat-Al-Asr to the other and they bid peace upon one another. (Tabrani 2010).

  • People may say that all is “loss”, but the Qur'an says, “No, not all”. (Ali, 1961, p. 41). Muslims believe those that practice the four principles/conditions as mentioned in this surah will not be in vain.

  • Kenneth Cragg: It can be emphasized that the Qur'anic injunctions that were urgent in the original pagan setting of the first Muslims, led them to reach a true monotheism. Thus change happens pragmatically and revolutionized each epoch of the qur’anic reception is a bold claim of the Qur'an (Kenneth Cragg 1973, p. 189).

  • From these renowned exegetes of the Qur'an and their handling of this vital surah, we may take such honest stock as space allows and take their analysis even further. Can the modern reader within Islam or outside it hope to know the Qur'an in its essential reality in a truly religious reading? We are ready to judge by literary criteria and with evident reverence and discipline, but yet with a liberty of mind that reads for itself (Cragg, 1973, p. 74).

All These exegetes offer a terse reminder of the importance of time and care in its utilization.

It is said to have sparked the conversion of ‘Amr ibn al-‘Āṣ after he recited it to the self-proclaimed prophet Musaylimah and he responded with a "surah" about the hyrax, which ‘Amr ibn al-‘As rejected as absurd.

Commentary

  1. Abul Ala Maududi: This Surah is a matchless specimen of comprehensiveness and brevity. A whole world of meaning has been compressed into its few brief words, which is too vast in content to be fully expressed even in a book. In it, in a clear and plain way it has been stated what is the way to true success for man and what is the way to ruin and destruction for him. Imam Shafe has very rightly said that if the people only considered this Surah well, it alone would suffice them for their guidance.

  2. Al-Tabarani: How important this Surah was in the sight of the Companions can be judged from the tradition cited from Hadrat Abdullah bin Hisn ad-Darimi Abu Madinah, according to which whenever any two of them met they would not part company until they had recited Surah Al-Asr to each other.

  3. Mufti Muhammad Shafi: the Struggle of the human being is like the one who is trying to sell ice. It is melting away and he needs to sell it quickly and make as much sales before the end of the day comes. Otherwise - all his valuables' and efforts will go to waste. [In the past - there were no Freezers, so your ice would melt into water by the end of the day.]

  4. Tafsir al-Mazhari: The taNween ن at the end of KhusriN makes it an INCREDIBLE Loss. Al Insaan - (lil Jins - to all human beings) - there is no exception - the entire category. A universal statement. The statement directly targets you.

  5. Al-Zamakhshari: People are in tremendous loss because of that which they buy and sell in life (of good and bad), except for the Saaliheen (righteous). O Allah, make us of the Saliheen (righteous), ameen. Because the Saliheen buy for the next life instead of for the pleasures of this life. And then they were profitable and happy on Judgment Day, and whoever was an enemy to their buying - then he was in loss and deaspair.

  6. Muhammad ash-Shawkani: Every human is in a state of buying and selling than others. He exhausts his ages (youth, middle age, seniority etc.) in purchasing Allah's pleasure. Rushing in gathering Allah's reward. Also refer to tafsir sura at-Takathur.

  7. Al-Akhfash al-Akbar said: - Khusr [loss] means Halaka حالك [violent death]. Mawt موت - general death. So the disbeliever is setting himself up for a violent death by being in this loss.

  8. al Farraa': A terrible ending ('uqooba عقوبة - ones end which is scary so people take warning from it [i.e. So the people say; 'I don't want to die like that'])

  9. Ibn Zayd: La fee Khusr (surely in Loss) means La fee Sharr (surely in Evil deeds).

  10. Muhammad Ash-Shanqeeti: Insaan is singular but it refers to all mankind.

  11. Ibn Taymiyyah: (as quoted by Muhammad Shafee' in Ma'arif al Qur'an):

Humanity is kept from accepting the truth of Islam by 2 obstacles; 1 - Shubuhaat (Doubts) 2 - Shahawaat (Temptations) Either one of these lead people astray. It is an intellectual problem (people feel answers by callers to Islam are not satisfactory). It is a psychological problem (people want to follow forbidden desires).

  12. Shah Waliullah: in At-Tadhkeer bi ayyaamillah - Remembrance of the Days of Allah. By Allah saying; Wa-al 'Asr - We will remember the special Days of Allah. The Days when; Allah created the human being (Adam), the Day He revealed the Qur'an to Prophet Muhammad, the Day Allah drowned the disbelievers of Prophet Nuh, the Day Allah destroyed Pharaoh and saved Moses, the Day of Badr, the Day when Allah spoke to Musa/Moses. The Day of Judgment, the Day the believers will see Allah. By saying al 'Asr - we will remember these Days so we will not want to be in loss.

  13. Hamiduddin Farahi: One of the lessons of this surah is that a lot of people see historical sites, which are a sign of destroyed nations.So when we see the legacies; the Pyramids, the Mountain homes of Thamud, and the great buildings and nations of power who have died - we realise that Allah destroyed them through time.This is a reminder of; Inna al insaana la fee Khusrin - surely man is in loss.Allah replies to such people;

أَوَلَمْ تَكُونُوا أَقْسَمْتُم مِّن قَبْلُ مَا لَكُم مِّن زَوَالٍ Were you not of those who would swear before that your time of downfall will not come? (Ibrahim (sura) 14:44)

Even visiting the ancient sites and ruins is a reminder of; wal 'Asr (by the time) innal insaana la fee khusr (surely man is in loss).

  14. Muhammad ash-Shawkani: These people gather and combine between Emaan and good action. Iman and good deeds work together. They Both strengthen each other. When you fulfill all the 4 attributes - then you have stronger Emaan (belief, good deeds, enjoining truth and patience.)If you have none - you probably don't have Emaan.

The Bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (Surat al-Hujurat 49:14)

  15. Al-Zamakhshari: Tawaassaw bil haqq - includes tawheed, obedience to Allah and His Messenger, being distant for worldly ambitions, and inclination to the hereafter.

  16. Muhammad ash-Shawkani: They enjoin and advise each other with the truth that deserves to be established and implemented.

  17. Qatada ibn al-Nu'man: bil haqq (with truth) refers to advising each other with the Qur'an.Reminding each other through the Qur'an.With tawheed, and most people understand it to be any good and any truth to be lived by.

  18. Ibn Kathir: Aladheena aamanoo (believe - with their hearts), wa 'amilu as-salihaat (do good deeds - with their limbs), and they enjoin each other to the truth by doing and enjoining on others to do acts of obedience and to abandon all that is forbidden, and they enjoin each other to perseverance against all calamities and they held to and advised to Emaan with perseverance whenever they were tortured for enjoining the truth.

  19. Muhammad Ash-Shanqeeti: Tawwaassaw bil haq - telling each other about the truth after doing good deeds. The 'amil as-saalihaat was good deeds - general ('aam), and enjoining the truth was khaas (specific).

  20. Al-Zamakhshari: Watawaasaw bis-sabr (enjoin upon each other perseverance) - Sabr over whatever Allah tests His slave with, perseverance in obedience to Allah, and in times of temptation. Allah put Sabr at the end and haqq first, and enjoining the haqq as more important. And more noble.

  21. Muhammad Ash-Shanqeeti: As-Sabireen - whenever a situation of patience is required - this person is patient. Through all circumstances.

Asbabun Nuzul

There are some who preach Asbabun Nuzul history (the causes of the decline), sura al-Lail, among others from Ibn Hatim, Al-Hakim, and al-Bazzar. In the history of Ibn Hatim said that the sura al-Lail down regarding the curmudgeonly owner of the palm trees. Told that the owner of the palm tree has a tree that mayangnya panhandle down to the indigent neighbor's home and have many children. Each time the fruit, she plucked a result of his neighbor's home, but if these dates fall and collected by the children of indigent neighbor, he immediately take it away. Even that has been entered into the mouths of children were also forced to release. Then, people complain it is indigent to the Prophet Muhammad, who promised to solve the problem. The Prophet then met with the owner of dates and said, "Give me a mayangnya palm tree sticking into the house of the Anu, and your share instead palm tree in heaven." The owner of the palm tree said, "Only so many hosts offer? I have a lot of palm trees and palm trees that were asked were best men." Then the owner of the palm trees were gone. Discussion was heard by a philanthropist who came to the Prophet and said, "Is it true master bid me, if it has menjadai palm tree is mine?" He replied "Yes." The man later met the owner of the palm tree. The owner of the palm tree said, "Did you know that Muhammad SAW promising palm tree in heaven instead of palm trees that mayangnya sticking to my neighbor's house? And that I have noted his offer, but its fruit is truly amazing, and I had a lot of palm trees, and none selebat tree that. " People were generous bberkata, "Are you going to sell it." He replied, "No, except if there are people who can comply with my wishes, but surely no one would be able to." Generous man said again, "How much do you want?" He said, "I want forty palm tree." He was silent and then said again, "You have to do with it, whether I give unto you 40 palm trees, and I ask the witness if you really want to exchange them." He summoned his friends to witness that exchange. Generous it was facing to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Date palm tree it has become mine and I'll leave to the lord." Prophet Muhammad then meet with the indigent, "Take this palm tree for you and your family." Then go down the whole sura al-Lail that distinguish the position and due to the stingy with generous people.

Other narrations mention, that most of the surah Al-Lail down concerning generosity of Abu Bakr. Al-Hakim said that paragraph 5 until the last verse of this sura kedermawaan down with respect to Abu Bakr who liberate slaves of the weak. While the history of Ibn Hatim sourced from Urwah mentioning Abu Bakr had been freed seven slaves who tortured her employer because believe in Allah, so come down verses 17 to 21 of this surah in respect kedermawaannya. Another History also says that verse 19 to 21 of this sura down with respect to kedermawaan Abu Bakr.

Principles of the contents of Al Lail

Human effort is different, because the reward is also different; people who like charity, cautious and confirmed the existence of God facilitated a good reward for him doing the good that leads to happiness in the afterlife, but the people who facilitated God for him to do the crimes that lead to misery in Hereafter, the property will not be going to benefit him; man who felt himself quite stingy and deny the existence of a good reward.

Surat Al Lail testified that deeds-deeds are done with sincere merely seeking the pleasure of God is what brings happiness in the Hereafter.

Relations with Surat Al Lail Surah Ad-Duha

In the letter Al Lail explained that people who do God's will be made easy taqwa taqwa deeds so as to obtain happiness. Meanwhile in the Adh-Dhuhaa letter explained that the luck of the Hereafter is better than luck in the world
